Sashay Wearable Art Show - Winged Victory (2019)

Meet Winged Victory (2019). Dressed for battle, though not for combat, Winged Victory (2019) embodies the ache and fierce desire for freedom, actualization and self-expression that characterizes being female in our current epoch. Her “sisters” accompany her, leading her on, visible like a cloud of spirits atop her head and adorning her huge wings, celebrating all Women of the World. The model is Iris Smith, the first African-American world-champion wrestler in 2010. Her power and stature perfectly inhabit the character of this victorious Queen.

In her battle for hearts and minds; she carries no weapons, but simply a Gullah pounding stick, used to strike rhythms as she walks.

Her costume is constructed of fabric, paper, wire and hardware. As she strides down the runway, she is accompanied by the strains of A Koleda Carol, sung by woman in the a capella choir “Kitka,” who specialize in the music of the Eastern European tradition.

Winged Victory (2019) received First Place in the Sashay Wearable Art Show at the Fine Arts Center at Colorado College.
